Equipment Requirements
USFA Policies
The following are the minimum requirements for all USFA competitions for the
1996-97 season. Please note that there are two categories of competitions:
- National:
- All North American Cups, the Junior Olympic
Championships, and the National Championships.
- Local/Divisional/Sectional:
- All other USFA-sanctioned competitions, including Division and Section
Championships.
Unless otherwise specified, the requirements listed below apply to both
categories.
- Names on uniforms
- Required at national competitions (see explanation below)
- Colored uniforms
- White or a single pastel (light) color (may change to FIE standard)
- Advertising on fencing uniforms
- See FIE Publicity Code
- Uniforms (jackets and pants)
- Standard uniform (FIE label not required)
- Plastrons (underarm protectors)
- Standard plastron; required with any uniform, with or without official FIE label
- Masks
- 12K punch test; sewn-in bib; bib is not target in foil
- Blades
- U-11 fencers at national competitions must use 0 or 2 length blades
Explanation concerning names on uniforms
The fencer's last name must be
legibly printed by hand or machine in dark blue capital letters not more
than 10 cm high either
- on the back of the uniform or lamé between the shoulders; or
- on the front or side of the thigh of the "rear" leg; or
- on a piece of fabric or lamé material that is firmly sewn to
the uniform in such a way that it will not detach during fencing or
catch the opponent's point. Fabric attached to the uniform must be the
same color as the part of the uniform to which it is attached. Lamé material must
be attached in such a way as not to alter the conductivity of the metallic vest or
jacket.
Names printed on tape are NOT acceptable.
